CHAPTER FIVE

It was with great trepidation that Lucas followed Andor to the back of the building where Angus’ workshop was set up. While a part of him was kind of glad to have smaller bands on, and the new ones the rebellion group had put on him were much nicer, they still chafed at his sore spots. After all, gauze could only protect him so much. It would be nice to have a lighter pair on. Yet, on the other hand, that would mean that he would need to have some control over his magic, and the thought terrified him.

Even before they reached the room, Lucas began to sweat from the heat emitting from their destination. By the time they actually entered, Lucas’ shirt was plastered to his back and droplets of perspiration were falling from his hair.

Lucas made the mistake of wiping his eyes and instantly regretted it when the salt from his own sweat began to make his eyes sting, so it took him a few moments of rapid blinking before he could see clearly again. Once he did, he was amazed at the size of the warlock standing in front of him.

Angus sported long red hair and an even longer beard. He was as tall as he was wide, and he seemed to take up all the space in the room. His huge rounded cheeks and bulbous nose were bright red. Be it from the heat or too much drink, Lucas didn’t know. Going by the many kegs of beer in the room, he was willing to bet it was a little bit of both.

“Andor!” Angus gave the warlock a slap on the back that almost sent him flying across the room. “It’s so nice to see you. But I know you didn’t come here just to visit. You’re way too busy for that. So what can I do for you?”

Andor let out a little cough as he readjusted his footing. “I need you to put smaller bands on Lucas.”

Angus closed one eye and moved in so his face was only inches from Andor’s. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, you have heard what he did to his parents.”

Lucas felt as if he’d just been kicked in the gut. Even here at the rebellion, he was an outcast. Would there ever be a place where he would be accepted? But then again, did Lucas deserve to be welcomed anywhere after what he’d done?

Andor pushed Angus away from him. “He’ll be fine. Tums will be training him in magic. Can you think of a better mentor?”

Angus shook his head. “Well, no.”

“Besides, once Lucas learns to control his magic, we’ll have one of the most powerful warlocks on our side. Nothing is going to be able to stop him.”

Shocked, Lucas blurted, “You really think that?”

Andor turned, his expression as serious as a heart attack. “I don’t think. I know.”

“You can’t be serious,” Lucas continued to argue.

“Remember, I’m a physician of sorts for warlocks and witches. That means that I can also detect a lot about magic.
